Haitian President Jovenel Moise has been assassinated. The president’s wife – Martine Moise was also shot and seriously injured during the attack that took place at their home early Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Haiti has declared a state of emergency after the president’s assassination. The nation is currently in chaos as insecurity heightens with gang violence sweeping the country. Claude Joseph, the interim Prime Minister condemned the killing and said the army and police have taken guard to keep citizens safe.
President Jovenel’s term has been characterized by conflict since the beginning of his term in 2015. He was sworn in in February 2017. This was after a lengthy wait owing to voter fraud allegations during the 2015 general elections. A presidential runoff was later done but had to be postponed twice due to political instability.
The troubled Caribbean nation has been unstable for years. However, its economy has worsened since COVID-19 hit leaving most citizens struggling to put food on the table.
President Jovenel leaves behind a troubled nation, although, sources say he should be blamed for the chaos after failing to schedule elections.
